Sol niger

A work of contemporary circus and performance conceived & choreographed by Keith Hennessy. Created in collaboration with Brett Womack, Emily Leap, Max, Seth Eisen, and Sean Feit.

* Sol niger is Latin for black sun and refers metaphorically to a solar eclipse.

Winner of the SF Bay Guardian Goldie Award and 2 Izzie Awards (Sean Feit - Music; Emily Leap - Individual Performance).

Sol niger was commissioned by Les Subsistances (Lyon, France), Centre Chorégraphique National (Belfort, France) and UC Davis Dept of Theatre and Dance, with additional support from FUSED (French-US Exchange in Dance), Zellerbach Family Fund, H & F Hewlett Foundation, SF Art Commission and private donations.

"Sol niger is probably Hennessy's best work yet. Looking at the devastation humankind has brought on itself, the work celebrates and laments the glory and frailty of being alive."
Rita Felciano, SF Bay Guardian

“A vibrant and theatrically daring new work…Circo Zero’s Sol niger is charming, funny, quirky, disturbing and frequently, to use an old-fashioned word, beautiful.”
Michael Wade Simpson, Culture Vulture
